This research tried to address the questions of the indicators of residential satisfaction in housing complexes and the roles of nature and green spaces in improving satisfaction of the dwellers. The more contact the dweller has with nature and green spaces, the more it will contribute to the mental health, peace of mind and eventually the satisfaction of families.
One of the psychological needs of man is to have a relation with green spaces and nature. Being away from nature is one of the problems with which the apartment-dweller is faced because of detached houses, yards and personal spaces in flats. A residential house is the central point of a man’s life. An individual or a family usually lives in a house. On the other hand, some biological necessities are required, such as sunlight, pleasant air, silence etc. (Kooshali et al., 2015).
Human beings want to communicate with other creatures instinctively. When the connection between man and his environment weakens, his soul and mental power collapse. Disturbance in cities and industrial life increases our need for tranquility. Today, most of the people living in big cities instinctively feel lack of something in their lives which is due to the artificial environment from which nature elements have been omitted.
Natural elements inside of a residential complex or even windows with a view towards nature contribute to an improved health status of the dwellers. Green buildings or even natural elements have a considerable effect on the decrease or elimination of the negative effects on the environment and its dwellers.
Different researchers conducted studies regarding the effect that these variables have on the perception of satisfaction, and this study proved that as well.
Residence represents a substantial link between man and his environment, and house, a place of his residence and relaxation, is one of the initial needs of man. In today’s world, man’s surrounding is constituted of urban spaces taking form of a lifeless, mechanical and artificial environment and it is increasing much faster than the natural spaces. Consequently, the apartment-dwelling man is often faced with the lack of any open and green space, as a result of a lack of any attention to the spatial quality and the ignorance of environmental effect on man’s soul.
Access to open spaces such as rooftops and gardens play an important role for the satisfaction of dwellers. If the architectural plan allows access of natural light and ventilation to the construction and its green landscape, it will be effective in producing satisfaction among the users. It is important to highlight the role of nature in man’s daily life in a way that he can experience the presence of natural elements in all spheres of life. It can be concluded that green spaces reduce mental stress, produce happiness and improve overall physical and mental health of people.
Natural landscapes provide us with beauty that is calming for our soul. As a result of the relation of man and nature, life motivation increases and it is followed by mental health and relaxation. Therefore, open and semi-open spaces such as a balcony, terrace and green rooftops can be incorporated in the design of buildings. Based on the findings of their study, and as a summary of this research, Kooshali et al. (2015) proposed that following principles of design of residential areas lead to residential satisfaction:
– Providing nature and natural elements, such as plants and green spaces, open spaces with clear sky and space for sunlight, in residential areas, and landscaping and designing inside and outside of the construction a natural landscape.
– By using architectural methods and facilities provide utmost use of natural light in residential spaces.
– Usage of natural materials in the residential space.
– Application of forms with relaxing character.
Finally, sustainable or green buildings can be an effective strategy to address harmful environmental impacts and indispensable to create healthier and more ecological cities.
It was and still is the responsible artists who do not make it easy, who are committed to a better environment and apply their influence, which shape the world of today and tomorrow. Hundertwasser’s aim was to help people to preserve their freedom, their identity, their right to happiness, and to prevent them straying from the straight and narrow way, he offered them barriers of beauty. To him, art was the link between creative man and nature. He used it for living, instead of surviving and then for living better and better. The painter-king with the five skins saw the world as an ever more beautiful painting. He believed in the happiness of beauty. It is up to us to discover it, and he gave us the key. Everything comes from art, and everything returns to art. Harmony with nature is the key to happiness and beauty is the path leading to it. There can be no beauty without art, which is the art of living (Restany, 1998).
