The waves in the New York Harbor beckoned the Spirit of Liberty as she made her debut in 1885. Her agent, Édouard René Lefèbvre de Laboulaye — president of the French Anti-Slavery Society and an expert on the U.S. Constitution was an abolitionist and supporter of President Abraham Lincoln’s Union winning the American Civil War in 1865 against the Southern Confederate States .
The Statue of Liberty began in France where Laboulaye had the idea to create a model that represent the spirit of liberty.
As the president of the French Anti-Slavery Society, Laboulaye believed the 13th Amendment that was added to the United States Constitution in 1865 was a milestone proving justice and liberty for all was possible. Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi Laboulaye, a sculptor turned Laboulaye idea into a monument ten years later. The monument was to strengthen France and the United States relationship.
