The development of an individual can be affected by many different life factors including genetic, biological, environmental, socio economic and lifestyle factors. Each factor will have varied affects on an individual’s development.
The first life factor is GENETIC:
An example of a genetic life factor that can affect development is having a genetic disease such as downs syndrome. This particular disease causes levels of learning disability and a difference in physical appearance.
The distinctive characteristics of this disorder can have affects on every day life for an individual. Having a learning disability means that the development of an individual when they are a child will be affected during the time of their education whilst they are at school. This is because they will process information slower than the other children in the class. This will make learning very difficult for the individual as they will be behind in their learning. During adolescence, people with downs syndrome will struggle to from relationships and won’t be able to explore the body in the same ways young adults do when physical changes start to occur. People with downs syndrome also have impaired physical development. “children with Down syndrome don’t develop motor skills in the same way that the typically-developing child does” This means that it may prevent them from doing a frequent amount of activities such as cycling twice a day or running every day. this is because they have reduced respiratory health. This may end up having negative effects on their wellbeing as they aren’t getting out of the house and exercising. Long term effects of down syndrome are that they are more prone to severe health problems. The hindered education will mean that thy won’t share the same understanding with other adults.
The next life factor is BIOLOGICAL:
An example of a biological life factor is foetal alcohol syndrome. This condition can affect the overall development of an individual as they progress through all of the life stages. This particular condition causes mental and physical defects that develop when the foetus is in the womb due to excessive alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
This condition can stunt foetal growth and their weight. This then affects the individual’s growth into adulthood. It can also affect the bodily functions which may pose a risk to having a family. When consuming alcohol when pregnant can damage the foetus’ brain structures. This then affects the development of a child, as things such as learning to walk and talk are leaned at a much slower rate. Also it can cause a large amount of cognitive disability such as memory and attention disorders. This development will then have effects on the child’s education during school and if the learning is hindered during childhood, then it will become very difficult to develop intellectual development throughout the other life stages. The condition also causes a development of drug and alcohol addiction which will have serious affects during adulthood. For example, it will be very difficult to gain a good job, therefore reducing a chance of a good income which one would need to maintain a positive lifestyle and development
The next life factor is ENVIRONENTAL:
An example of an environmental factor that would have effects on an individual’s development is have a dysfunctional family and home life. For example, the parents of the family may be abusive. Being in an environment that is abusive can have negative effects both short term and long term.
A child may be scared to speak up about their abuse and may feel very trapped. This can cause large effects on their mental state. This may carry on to affect them during adulthood. Other socially related problems would include withdrawal, loneliness, loss of confidence, school problems, learning disorders, anxiety and depression (which could be likely to fuel self-harm or possibly suicidal thoughts), and criminal behaviour. Discipline problems may also arise including selfishness, defiance, unstable behaviour, recklessness, deceitfulness, violent behaviour and disruptive behaviour. This can make it very difficult for an individual’s development, as they won’t be able to recognise what is expected of them in society as they develop into adulthood. Educational problems would include disruptive behaviour, bullying, decreased learning ability and academic achievements which are vital for development as people get older and need to earn jobs .
The next life factor is SOCIO ECONMIC:
A group of individuals or entities who share similar characteristics and interests. Peer groups, in the case of people who have characteristics which include similarities such as socio-economic status, level of education, and ethnic background and so on amongst its individual members. In the context of financial markets, peer group usually refers to companies that operate in the same industry sector and are of similar size. s
